Employment and Career information
 Assistant Prosecutors
Assistant Prosecutors are full time Attorneys who prosecute criminal cases at the direction of the County Prosecutor in Superior Court. Most Assistant Prosecutors are licensed to practice law in New Jersey prior to being hired by the sitting Prosecutor, however some may be hired as a Law Clerk in anticipation of passing the Bar Exam.
Once the Bar Exam has been passed the Prosecutor has the option of hiring the former Law Clerk as a full time Assistant Prosecutor.
Detectives
Detectives are full time Law Enforcement Officers who are charged with the responsibility of investigating criminal activity in Ocean County. After completing a comprehensive Police Academy, Detectives are certified by the New Jersey State Police Training Commission and are issued firearms.
Applicants for the position of Detective should possess a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university. Additional qualifications include previous law enforcement experience.
Agents
Prosecutor’s Agents are full time employees who are generally retired police officers or recent college graduates who are attempting to gain law enforcement knowledge and experience, leading to a law enforcement career.
Agents are charged with the responsibility of assisting the Prosecutor's Detectives and Assistant Prosecutors with daily activities needed to complete the mission of the Prosecutor’s Office.
Clerical
The clerical staff supports the efforts of the investigative and legal staff by providing data processing, word processing, filing, typing, and other duties as needed to coordinate court dates; calendars, and to assist the specialized units in their mission.
Victim Witness
On December 5, 1991, the voter approved Victims’ Rights Amendment to the state’s constitution became law, guaranteeing that a victim of crime be treated with fairness, compassion and respect by the criminal justice system. The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office maintains a victim/witness unit, dedicated to the realization of the rights encompassed in that constitutional guarantee. Victim and Witness counselors are trained to advise victims of their rights, to communicate with them about the status of criminal proceedings and to assist them with social service, counseling and financial referrals.
