Trial Section
The newly expanded Trial Section represents the largest section of the Prosecutor's Office.
The goals of the expanded Trial Section are to enhance the State's ability to prosecute cases through a more effective use of its resources, to attempt to expedite the time-frames for the prosecution of criminal matters to provide more expedient results for victims of crime and as always to promote justice.
This section is staffed by teams of Assistant Prosecutors and Detectives who are responsible for all phases of the prosecution of a case once it is generated from the screening unit until the matter is resolved. This includes all court events, including arraignments, status conferences, plea negotiations and sentencing as well as motion practice.
Each team is comprised of at least three Detectives who prepare the cases for pre-grand jury review by an Assistant Prosecutor by obtaining all reports, evaluations, testing results, photographs, etc. . These same Detectives also maintain responsibility fro these cases after grand jury presentations and will act as Trial Detectives throughout the pendency of the prosecution, whether the matter resolves through a plea or a trial.
Each team is also staffed by a Trial Team Leader (an Assistant Prosecutor), and at least three other Prosecutors. At least one of these Assistant Prosecutors takes responsibility for presenting all of team cases to the Grand Jury. The other Prosecutors on the team are subsequently assigned cases that have been indicted.
Cases involving crimes of the first and second degree and crimes of violence are routinely assigned to an individual Assistant Prosecutor at inception to foster stability and consistency of representation for the victims.
